Gary Kearney opened his first law office in the San Gabriel Valley in 1977 and was an active memberof the Pasadena legal community for over 46 years. During this time, he devoted his practice primarily to family law, most recently as a partner in the family law firm of Kearney|Baker. He became a Certified Family Law Specialist in 1985 and has maintained that status ever since. He handled complex family law issues and was counsel in over 65 appeals and 17 writs, the most notable of which were County of Los Angeles v. Pattinson, Herbst v. Swan, Laudeman v. Laudeman, Asfaw v. Wodlerhan, and Starr v. Starr. He has participated in hundreds of successful family law mediations, both as counsel and as mediator.
Mr. Kearney is unique because of his experience as a longtime family law practitioner as well as his technical background, which gives him the ability to assist in thinking about resolving issues in a manner which is both creative and respectful to all parties. It is his position that every case may not fit into a particular box and should be considered in the light of the needs of the individuals rather than in the light of strict rules. It is Mr. Kearney’s training as an engineer which facilitates a focus on a solution which best works for the parties rather than strict adherence to the form in family law. Mr. Kearney has applied this approach throughout his practice and as a mediator to strive for and obtain a fair resolution in hundreds of cases.
Mr. Kearney has been a member of the Family Law Sections of the Pasadena and Los Angeles County Bar Associations throughout his practice. He was a Director of the California Association of Family Law Specialists from 1992 to 2002, and its President in 1999. He was the Chair of the Pasadena Bar Association’s Family Law Section from 2000 through 2009. He has been a member of the American Association throughout his career.

Very professional place to mediate a legal matter. Many places to have a private conversation, comfortable surroundings
Honorable Mary Thornton House mediated over our impossible case. I never thought this could get resolved, as we were stuck on both sides for almost 4 years. Honorable Mary Thornton House listened to both sides and was able to communicate in a way that both sides understood. She was tenacious, diligent and had attention to details with the accounting and figures presented. We went back and forth into the night. But, she was able to calmly able to get a resolution on both sides. The honorable judge said that in ruling a case in court. You have an instant friend and a permanent enemy. In this case, I received a fair resolution. Grateful, that I did not have to go to court. Glad that our case got resolved. I highly recommend honorable Mary Thornton House
